MCC Christmas Reports

Many churches use the Christmas holidays, especially Christmas Eve, to rent a large venue and present a special service as an outreach to the entire community.

In the United Kingdom, large numbers at church services are rare. However, Journey MCC (Birmingham, England), a church established in 2004 with funding from the MCC Church Planting Fund, had over 250 people at their Queer Carol Service, an awesome number, especially considering that the church has 35 members! Rev. Chris Dowd is the Pastor.

MCC Edinburgh (Scotland) broke all previous records with 90 people in attendance at their holiday service.

Each Christmas Eve, MCC Toronto (Ontario, Canada) hosts its 10:30 pm service at Roy Thomson Hall, one of Toronto's premier concert halls. An article in The Globe and Mail stated, "The celebration was defined by its 2,500 participants, who were dressed in velvet and leather, studs and metal. Imagine -- people dressing up like that for Christmas Eve. The music was produced with huge pizzazz. When we all rose, in full puff, to belt out Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, the organ and choir made it seem as if we were all going to levitate to heaven." Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes is Senior Pastor.

For 11 years MCC Sydney (Australia) has used Sydney Town Hall as their Christmas Eve venue. For the first time the Lord Mayor of Sydney brought formal greetings. Over 1000 people attended the service. Rev. Dorothy McRae-McMahon of the Uniting Church was the speaker, and last year's speaker, The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby from the Australian High Court was also present. Rev. Robert Clark of Good Shepherd MCC (Sydney) celebrated Communion.

MCC Disability Forum

Accessible Minds, Creating Accessible Spirits and Accessible Churches

The MCC Disability Forum was created in 2001 and is open to all MCCers who have disabilities, who share the lives of those who do, or who have a calling for the equal treatment of people with disabilities.

Working with Rev. Paul Fairley, the Forum assists with accessibility issues, addresses mobility concerns, provides ASL and other interpreters, and insures that MCC conference materials are formatted for people with visual impairments. Accessibility coordinators have served at every MCC conference.

Forum members assist local churches in increasing accessibility, work with the Board of Elders, which has adopted the "Accessible Congregation Principles," and are seeking Forum accreditation as an MCC para-church ministry.

They offer fellowship and support to MCCers of all ability levels, provide resources and materials for churches to address accessibility and inclusion issues, and offer support to all MCC conference teams so that  no one is excluded from an MCC event because of a disability.

To learn more about the MCC Disability Forum or to become a Forum member, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ufmccdisforum and click "Join." You'll gain access to the listserv and the online resource library.

Please share this information – and encourage members of your congregation to join the MCC Disability Forum.
