Congratulations!  Rev. Robert L. Griffin was elected to the Board of Trustees for the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  He was the first MCC student at EDS and now is the first MCC Trustee for the seminary!

Bryan Parker, chair of the Lay Ministry Council, attended the Out & Equal Annual Workplace Summit in Austin, Texas.

Rev. Joseph Shore-Goss is serving as the first chaplain to the TransGender Harm Reduction project at Children's Hospital Los Angeles' division of adolescent medicine.

Rev. Elder Ken Martin presided at the affiliation service for MCC Quezon City (Philippines) which was attended by over 100 people.  The space our Asia Pacific Initiative is renting for them is the chapel, large office, and meeting room at the United Church of Christ Philippines' administration building.

Namesake, three women from Wichita Falls MCC (Texas), performed at the Texas/Oklahoma Fair.

Bruce Harmon was elected to the Oroville Elementary School Board of Trustees. He is the first openly gay person to serve in any elected position in Oroville, located in a very conservative part of northern California.

Congratulations!  Michelle Burnett won second place in the San Antonio, Texas, city wide talent contest by singing "Blessed".

Jenny-Anne and Elen from MCC Manchester (England) were interviewed on ITV's This Morning program in London.  They talked being out and open transgender people and about MCC.

Justin Ryan enjoyed a mini-tour in Florida performing concerts at Spirit of Life MCC (New Port Ritchie), King of Peace MCC (St. Petersburg), Joy MCC (Orlando), as well as at a Presbyterian Church which had never had anyone present a concert before!

Rev. Ken Erhke has preached at Trinity MCC (Arlington, Texas) and MCC Longview (Texas) as he finishes his internship and sits for his licensure exams to become a nursing home administrator.

Rev. Charley Garrison spoke to the World Religions class at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.  During the Q&A time, the students were very interested in MCC.

Teddy Martin, a member of Good Shepherd MCC (Granville, NSW, Australia) serves as Worthy Matron of her chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Rev. Dr. Cindi Love led a seminar at the pre-conference institute of SAGE (Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elderly) in New York City. Irma Bauer Levesque, our Development Director, and others from MCC's new Senior Housing project also attended the conference.

Rev. Rosario Vargas participated in a forum at Sacramento City College, speaking about the lives of transgender people. 

Rev. Elder Troy D. Perry led a Spiritual Renewal weekend at MCC Albuquerque (New Mexico) earlier this month and then attended the San Diego, California, premier of Call Me Troy and preached at MCC San Diego the next weekend.

MCC Edinburgh (Scotland) is currently offering the CLM course.  Rev. Maxwell Reay and Gail Carmichael are leading 11 participants in Creating a Life that Matters.  They are the first church in Europe, actually in Region 4, to offer the course.

Rev. Tim Hamilton is the first clinic chaplain and the first gay chaplain at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles.  For the third year he is organizing the worship service, Tribal Revival, at the Southwest Leather Conference.

We're growing!  Eternal Joy MCC (Dayton, Ohio) has added a second morning service, while MCC of the Quad Cities (Davenport, Iowa) added one on Saturday evening.

MCCers in The Advocate!  The September 23 issue pictured Rev. Brad Wishon in an article about the anti-marriage initiative there.  The next one contained a photo of Rev. Elder Troy Perry, naming him as one of the gay icons.

Angela Mitchell was one of five women to create a mural for the Center for Women and Families in Louisville, Kentucky.  As part of the dedication ceremony, she also read an original poem.

MCC of Greater St. Louis (Missouri) broke ground for their $1.3 million (USD), 22,000 square foot facility.  Participants included a representative of the Mayor's office, an Alderwoman, state Representatives and Senators, and other dignitaries.  (Click Here )

Rev. Elder Darlene Garner was re-appointed as Vice Moderator of the Board of Elders for 2009.

Gentle Shepherd MCC received the Leadership Award for the faith category during the Third Annual Coming Out Gayla in Tallahassee, Florida.

Rev. Dr. Tom Bohache was a guest preacher at MCC of the Chesapeake (Annapolis, Maryland).

Harbor MCC (Galveston, Texas) is now meeting each week in a different home due to losing their worship space to Hurricane Ike.  Folks from MCC Austin, MCC San Antonio, and Resurrection MCC (Houston) went down to help them with the cleanup.

Blessing the Animals

Many of our churches host a Blessing of the Animals on or near the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi in early October.
 
At MCC of Greater Dallas (Texas) everyone brought pet food, supplies, or treats to give to those in need.
 
MCC Knoxville (Tennessee) joined with St. Ninians for this event.
 
MCC Toronto (Canada) took pictures of each participant and pet and sent them to the family.
 
Imago Dei MCC (Glen Mills, Pennsylvania) combined their blessing with National Coming Out Day and shared a picnic with ALL family members.
 
The Animal Ministry Team of Jesus MCC (Indianapolis, Indiana) hosted their church's first pet blessing festival.
 
Vision of Hope MCC (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) had theirs in a city park.
 
All furry and feathered and scaly creatures and their families gathered on the lawn of All God's Children MCC (Minneapolis, Minnesota) to be blessed and each animal received a St. Francis medal.
 
Church of Our Savior MCC (Boynton Beach, Florida) joined with New Hope First Community Church for their celebration and service.
 
In July MCC/ICM Los Angeles (California) had a Blessing of the Animals and open house, to which they invited people in their new neighborhood.
 
At FirstCoast MCC (St. Augustine, Florida) each pet was individually blessed and anointed.
 
MCC of the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Pennsylvania) shared their blessing with the entire community by doing it just before the area's AIDS Walk.
 
Pets were part of the morning service at MCC of the Coachella Valley (Cathedral City, California) and at MCC New York (New York).
 
Holy Covenant MCC (Brookfield, Illinois) hosted a Blessing of the Beasts before their cookout with achurc4me? MCC (Chicago, Illinois)
 
Stuffed animals were among the pets blessed at MCC Albuquerque (New Mexico) where all participants received a certificate.
 
King of Peace MCC (St. Petersburg, Florida) held their service in the garden of the church.

 

Children, Youth and Young Adults

Valley Ministries MCC (Stockton, California) hosted a Community Fair and Kids' Festival for children of all ages!

The children from MCC Brightwaves (Brighton, England) rode on a fire truck in the Pride parade.  Then they sang songs rewritten by Rev. Debbie Gaston: Mamma Mia (Holy Spirit) and Thank You for the Music (Thank You for the Spirit).

MCC of the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Pennsylvania) offers a free movie every Thursday afternoon for children.

The children at MCC Corpus Christi (Texas) enjoyed a movie night and hamburgers, while the adults gathered in another room to enjoy one more on their level!

Trunk or Treat!  Yes, you read that correctly!  At Agape MCC (Ft. Worth, Texas) the adults decorate the trunks of their cars and the costumed children stop by for treats during an evening of games, activities, fun, and food!  FirstCoast MCC (St. Augustine, Florida) did a similar event and even let the adults trunk-r-treat!  At MCC Topeka (Kansas) they did likewise after church one Sunday just as soon as the kids changed into their costumes.

The Kornerstone Kids enjoy at time in Children's Church during the sermon on Sunday at Cornerstone MCC (Mobile, Alabama).

There is now a Children's Church on the second Sunday of the month at New Life MCC of Hampton Roads (Virginia).

After studying about God blessing Abraham, who then blessed the people, the younger children in the Sunday School at MCC Toronto (Canada) made blessing trees.  The leaves named their blessings - my daddies, rice krispies, big trucks, love, food, my Game Boy.

It wasn't just the children at MCC Lubbock (Texas) who enjoyed the Fall Carnival with its haunted house, contests, prizes, pumpkin carving, cake walks, food and more!

Stewardship is the topic being studied at Exodus MCC (Abilene, Texas).  Each lesson has a coupon at the bottom to be completed and deposited for prize drawings for those who participated - children and adults!

 

Ministry Ideas to use

Christ Covenant MCC (Decatur, Georgia) hosted the Panda Verandah Extravaganza, their annual fall gala and fundraiser at Zoo Atlanta.  With just over 75 people participating, they raised $10,000 (USD) at this kid-friendly evening which included viewing the one month-old Giant Panda cub, music, dancing, a silent auction, and the presentation of their Bridge Builder Award to MEGA Family Project for their work in the community.

MCC Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) celebrated OUTFEST by preaching the Gospel with a festive and colorful 60's theme.

More than a poem in the Bible!  Psalm 37 is a new support group meeting at MCC Washington DC for those facing job loss, foreclosure on their homes, and other effects of the economy.

Richmond Magazine selected 25 activities not to miss this year and one was a bus tour exploring people and events which shaped the LGBT community.  Of course, the folks from MCC Richmond (Virginia) participated with historian Beth Marschak, co-author of Images of America: Lesbian and Gay Richmond.

All Saints MCC (Christchurch, Aotearoa/New Zealand) enjoyed a Spring into Spring Tea a few weeks ago.  (No, this isn't old news.  It may be fall in Europe and North America, but it's spring in the southern hemisphere!)

Christmas Shopping!  MCC Austin (Texas) will have artists and craftspeople displaying their wares at their Christmas Bazaar on 28-29 November.  MCC Edinburgh (Scotland) will have their Christmas Fayre on the 22nd complete with handmade items and baked goods.

Couples who had been legally wed in Canada, Massachusetts, or California were honored and blessed during a special service at Church of the Trinity MCC. (Sarasota, Florida).

Divine Peace MCC (Pontiac, Michigan) had a PowerPoint presentation with pictures and names of family and friends who had fought/are fighting cancer.  Then for All Saints Day, there was one for people who had been spiritual saints in their lives.  MCC in the Valley (North Hollywood, California) did likewise on All Saints Day.

Great Fundraiser!  Sherry Arbuckle, Kathy Beasley, Bev Edgar, Genette Heinz, and Rick Sherwin, the Lay Delegates of Joy MCC (Orlando, Florida) are creating a 2009 calendar with birthdays, anniversaries, and other significant days noted.  The monthly pictures will feature various ministry teams and business owners can purchase an advertisement for their favorite month.

Praise, Ponder, Pray or Jesus Night Out is a new time each month for learning about prayer and sharing in prayer and praise at Vision of Hope MCC (Mountville, Pennsylvania).

Movies with Mikee is a gathering of folks from MCC Newcastle (England) to view a movie and then discuss its theological and spiritual implications, even if the writers didn't intend that.

Dr. Bob Weiber is leading Mending the Spirit, a new men's spirituality group at All God's Children MCC (Minneapolis, Minnesota).

Check it out!  Big Easy MCC (New Orleans, Louisiana) now has 48 videos viewed by almost 6000 people on YouTube.  Their user name is bigeasymcc.

St. John's MCC
(Raleigh, North Carolina) opens its doors not only to AA and NA meetings, but also to Sex Addicts Anonymous and Sexual Compulsion Anonymous groups.

Peterson Toscano
will be appearing at Pikes Peak MCC (Colorado Springs, Colorado) for Dreaming of Decadence: a Night of Wicked Laughter and Devilish Desserts, which will also feature an auction of goods and services on November 15.

For Grand Final Day folks from MCC Melbourne (Australia) enjoyed a barbeque and dressed as their favorite sports star or wore team colors.

The Rainbow Players Theater Company of MCC Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Pennsylvania) opens its first season with the musical comedy The Big Voice: God or Merman? on 14-15 November.  (Click Here )

At their annual Diamond Ball, Sunshine Cathedral MCC presented Sunny Awards to  Grace Tedder and Joel Slotnick, Volunteer of the Year; Gregory Kurdian, Angel Award; Sterling Bank, Community Award; and Jack Jones, Pioneer Award.  During the evening there was a 50/50 raffle with a portion of the proceeds going to the Jamaican AIDS Services.

Sing it!  Church of Our Savior MCC (Boynton Beach, Florida) spent a fun evening doing karaoke, while enjoying refreshments and a raffle.

Open Door MCC
(Boyds, Maryland) has so many different ministries that involve food ... typical MCC! ... that they jokingly call themselves OVEN Door MCC!

MCC of the Rockies
(Denver, Colorado) is planning a Friends and Family Sunday for November 9, making it the perfect time to invite, not only new folks to church, but also ones who used to attend.

Dance by the Harvest Moon was the appropriate theme for a fundraiser for Harvest MCC (Denton, Texas).

MCC Seattle (Washington) had an all music service complete with harp, flute, tambourine, and the choir from Holy Names Academy.

Pat Turner of SunCoast Cathedral MCC (Venice, Florida) has created emergency planning notebooks for all of the pastoral staff with information such as where congregants will be in the event of a hurricane, if they need assistance or can be of assistance to others, locations of shelters in three counties, lists of supplies and documents to secure before the storm, and other helpful information.

Angels of Hope MCC (Green Bay and Appleton, Wisconsin) participated in October Fest in Appleton.

MCC Portland (Oregon) will have their Harvest Dinner and Auction on November 22.

On October 29 MCC San Francisco (California) celebrated a special Dia de los Muertos service placing articles of remembrance (photos, ashes, toys) on the altar.  The Day of the Dead is not Halloween, which was a European pagan holiday.  Dia de los Muertos is an ancient festivity dating from prehispanic Mexico to celebrate children and the dead ... remembering the dead, but celebrating the continuity of life.

New Spirit MCC
(Cincinnati, Ohio) folks dressed in matching T-shirts to walk the haunted trail at Land of Illusion.

The Emerald Squares are teaching dance classes at Holy Cross MCC (Pensacola, Florida).

Each congregant at First MCC (Atlanta, Georgia) was given three names to call and invite them to faithful worship.  It was a great way to make new friends and be in touch with others who hadn't been at church recently.

Rev. Karl Hand has resigned as interim pastor of MCC Sydney (Australia).  He will be the pastor of a new Sydney church, CRAVE MCC.

Stephanie Maxson will be ordained at MCC Detroit (Michigan) on 15 November.
 
MCC San Francisco (California) hosted a farewell blessing for interns Jakob Hero, Brian Hutchinson, and Jill Sizemore and welcomed new intern Joshua Love.

Supporting One Another

Rev. Hugh Charest is mourning the loss of his partner, Mark Gherman.

Rev. Martha Daniels had surgery for Stage 2 triple negative (not good) breast cancer.  She will undergo 18 weeks of chemo and then radiation therapy.  Pray for her, her family, and the folks at MCC Windsor (Ontario). The folks at Good Hope MCC (Cape Town, South Africa) held a Jazz Evening at West End to raise funds to assist Rev. Nokuthula Dlhadhla of Hope and Unity MCC (Johannesburg, South Africa) with her ongoing medical expenses as she recovers from the surgery which eliminated her paralysis.

Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson officiated at the dedication service for Hannah Joy Caster at Christ Chapel MCC (Santa Ana, California).  She is the daughter of Naomi and Chris Caster and granddaughter of Marsha and Cindy Stevens-Pino.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. AIDS Memorial 

MCC is compiling a listing of the names of the members of our churches, friends and families who have died over the years to add to our archives and be published as part of our online Global HIV/AIDS Ministries.  Please send the name (and year, if you know it) of anyone who died of AIDS to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Celebrating Forty Years of Faith, Hope & Love (1968 - 2008)

 
MCC London, Ontario (Canada) hosted a showing of Call Me Troy for the community, as did MCC Omaha (Nebraska).
 
Celebrating both MCC and their church's anniversary were MCC Austin (Texas), 33 years, and MCC of the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Pennsylvania), 24 years.
 
MCC/ICM Los Angeles (California) hosted a weekend celebration which included a showing of Call Me Troy,  A Night of Illumination glittering at the Renaissance Montura Hotel, and exciting worship celebrations on Sunday with Rev. Elder Troy Perry and Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson participating. (Click Here )
 
 MCC Of Greater Dallas (Texas) celebrated the 39th anniversary of MCC's presence in Dallas and the 5th anniversary of their church with Rev. Dr. Mona West as their special guest.
 
Everyone at MCC Knoxville (Tennessee) wore pink on Fellowship Sunday, not only to honor MCC, but also as recognition of their participation in the Race for the Cure.
 
Holy Covenant MCC (Brookfield, Illinois) and aChurch4Me? MCC (Chicago) joined together for a picnic.  On Sunday aChurch4Me? was officially recognized as an MCC church with 51 members!  Ritchie Crownfield presented their certificate and they showed excerpts from both Call Me Troy and the Would Jesus Discriminate? video.
 
MCC Newcastle (England) hosted a book launch for The Wilderness People: Real Life Stories from an Inclusive Church and a party, which included an exhibit of art and memories.
 
Rev. Elder Troy Perry was the special guest at a weekend celebration at First MCC of Atlanta (Georgia).   They renamed their social hall The Rev. Troy Perry Hall, the first MCC to so honor our founder, and hosted the Atlanta premier of Call Me Troy, a reception, and a Justice Prayer Breakfast.  Sunday's service saw 40 candles adorn the altar, sponsored by community businesses, organizations and friends in celebration of the incredible journey of MCC.  They also celebrated the launch of their new church extension in Conyers, Georgia.
 
MCC Richmond (Virginia) brought their very favorite dishes for Potluck on the High Holy Day of Fellowship Sunday!  Bubba Bruce was the guest preacher, a member of MCC for 31 years.
 
MCC of the Blue Ridge (Roanoke, Virginia) held a series of potlucks and workshops to learn more about what it means to be an MCC member/congregation.  They reviewed our history from being the "gay church," to being the "church with AIDS," to being "that human rights church."
 
At MCC Sydney (Australia) they shared their first or favorite memory about MCC.
 
Dr. Mark Jordan, professor of religion at Emory University, wrote an excellent article about Rev. Elder Troy Perry and the founding of MCC, equating it to Reformation Sunday. (Click Here )

Living Springs MCC (Bath, England) combined it with their annual Harvest Thanksgiving.  They brought gifts of food, fruits, and vegetables to decorate the chapel and then donate to Julian House night shelter.
 
MCC NOVA (Fairfax, Virginia) celebrated with a ministry fair.

The Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex churches wore their WJD t-shirts and marched together in the Pride parade, reminding everyone of MCC's message of God's inclusive love.  Those churches are Agape MCC (Ft.Worth), Harvest MCC (Denton), MCC of Greater Dallas, Promise MCC (Oak Park), and Trinity MCC (Arlington).
 
MCC Boston (Massachusetts) collected $151 (USD) to bring individuals from around the world to Regional Conferences and enjoyed a huge cake trimmed in the blue and purple of the MCC logo.
 
The Los Angeles (California) City Council recognized the work of Rev. Troy D. Perry with a resolution for the 40th anniversary of our movement.  His spouse Phillip DeBlieck was also honored.  It was presented at City Hall on October 24.
 
MCC Topeka (Kansas) celebrated with Jason & deMarco in concert and Rev. Lee Carlton as their special guest.  The video The Doors of MCC by Dottie and Jenni from their church had its premier!
 
MCC Baltimore (Maryland) combined their celebration with an observance of All Saints Day.
