A Message from the Editor

I am so grateful for all of your prayers and well-wishes during my surgery and recuperation. I will remain on oxygen for quite a while, but I get better and more active every day, as I adjust to having only one lung. The prayer now is to be cancer-free for five years and declared "cured"! I am delighted to be back at work, providing the exciting news about our churches and people around the world. Thank you for being understanding about the missed issues of our "Around the Fellowship" newsletter. If you've sent news and don't see it in this issue, please know that another issue will be out next week, and two more issues in March. I hope to see many of you at our General Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona in July!

Fifty clergy, pastoral leaders, church planters, and lay leaders from our 14 churches and new plants in South America gathered at a Roman Catholic retreat center in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the MCC Leadership Institute in December. The nuns who had hosted the gathering, fed them, and been so attentive to their needs throughout the weekend, joined the group for their concluding service. They participated in singing and prayers and listened attentively to the sermon. Then, at the moment of Communion, the unexpected happened. The Roman Catholic nuns came forward and actually received The Bread, The Cup, and a Blessing from the hands of God's Queer Children in MCC!

Learn more about ... Our Church Plant in Nigeria

Rev. Rowland Jide Macaulay, Associate Pastor for African Ministries at MCC of North London (England, UK), moved to Nigeria a few months ago to begin his work there. He left his son, Oluwatosin, and his mother in London, but has gained a new family of hope in Nigeria.

Here is his story in his own words...

"I am Nigerian/British, 40 year-old, gay man, Christian theologian, poet, dancer, self-published author, educator in business and Christian education, and confirmed and ordained Pastor, who holds a law degree and a Masters degree in Theology.

"I spent most of my teens in Nigeria, before returning to London. Growing up gay was difficult. I fell and rose with many issues and problems, as a result of culture and faith.

"My religious practice was under the shadow of a faith interpretation that marginalized, judged, and infuriated me. My knowledge of Christian theology was both academic and personal, which allowed me to conclude, after a wild and long journey to find God as a gay man, that God loves all of God's children, heterosexuals, homosexuals and non-sexuals. I share the pain, struggles, joy and hope of my LGBT sisters and brothers.

"I had over the last five years given serious thoughts to returning to Lagos, Nigeria, a city and country I love so much, not just for its buzzing towns, villages, cities, or beautiful beaches, but for the restitution of many LGBT people.

"My goal is to expand on the vision of Metropolitan Community Churches and create a safe space for fellowship, education, enlightenment and worship in Nigeria. This simple and radical message of love and liberation must reach all people, families, and politicians, even in a complicated culture and society like Nigeria. In a society that kills gay people, I went to Nigeria with much trepidation.

"We had an introductory service at the Ikeja Capital City Hotel. Thirty-two people attended the event. We flagged it as an inclusive gospel ministry for all of God's Children. This was important because of the political and cultural bias on the issues of same-sex. We had a full service followed by a discussion on Sexuality and Spirituality. The group is currently called the House of Rainbow.

"I continue in hope of your support for the church plant in Lagos, Nigeria. This plant will be different in the sense that it would go to the heart of the community where injustice, isolation, rejection and ostracism by society and family know no bounds. This church will be an example of MCC's global social justice and inclusive gospel of Jesus' love with a reassurance that injustice anywhere in the world is an injustice to all.

"Your prayers and financial contributions would make a difference to educate and unlearn homophobia. We want our ministries to reach people who are marginalized because of their sexual orientation, health status or social class. We want them to know that God's love is beyond the boundaries of the definition of societal norms.

"In all our prayers, I invite you to say to God, 'Let our voice be the voice of the voiceless, our eyes be the eyes for the blind, and our faces be the face for the faceless'."

The House of Rainbow is growing. On New Year's Eve they had 130 in worship followed by a party, complete with a race to see who could tie the most elaborate woman's African headdress and a drag show!

Rev. Macauley's father founded and continues to teach at a Bible university in Nigeria and is the President of Nigeria's Association of Christian Theologians. However, he is supporting a proposed law that would, among other things, make even the gathering of LBGT folks at House of Rainbow illegal and send his son to five years in jail. There is already a law in the country that condemns people to 14 years in prison and possible stoning for having gay sex.
